Learn how to open websites, search for information, and recognise safe website addresses.
Browser screens can look a little different on Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox, but the steps are almost the same.

- Open your browser and find the address bar.
- Visit a website safely and search for information.
- Use the back button to move around without getting lost.
Your web browser
A web browser is the program you use to visit websites. Common browsers include Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.
Step 1: Open the browser
- Find the browser icon on your desktop, dock, or taskbar.
- Click it once to open.
- You will usually see a home page or a blank tab.
Step 2: Visit a website
- Click inside the address bar at the top.
- Type a website address, for example www.identity-service.gov.
- Press Enter on your keyboard.
Step 3: Search for something
- Open Google or another search engine.
- Type what you want to find, such as clinic near me.
- Read the result titles carefully before clicking.
When a government website ends in .the official government domain in your country, that is a strong sign it is official.
Step 4: Use the back button
- Look for the back arrow near the top-left of the browser window.
- Click it once to return to the previous page.
- Use it when you want to undo a click or go back to the search results.
