Demystifying 'The Cloud'
Find out what 'the cloud' actually means and how it keeps your files safe.
What Is “The Cloud”?
You have probably heard people say “it is saved in the cloud” or “I use cloud storage.” But what does that actually mean?
The cloud is simply someone else’s computer. When you save a file to the cloud, it is stored on powerful computers in a building — kept safe, backed up, and available whenever you need it.
Think of it like a safe deposit box at a bank. Instead of keeping your things at home where they might be lost, you put them somewhere safe and you can get them from any branch.
Cloud services you might already use in Singapore
- Google Drive — saves documents, photos, and files — free with a Gmail account
- iCloud — Apple’s storage for iPhone and iPad users
- OneDrive — Microsoft’s storage, built into Windows computers
- MyInfo on SingPass — stores your personal data so you can fill in government forms quickly without retyping everything
Why the cloud is helpful
- Your family photos are safe even if your phone is lost or damaged.
- You can see your files on your phone, tablet, or any computer.
- Photos and documents are backed up automatically.
- You can share photos with family in Singapore or overseas easily.
How to save a photo to the cloud (Google Photos)
- Download the Google Photos app from the App Store or Google Play — it is free.
- Sign in with your Gmail address.
- Allow the app to back up your photos when asked.
- Your photos will now be saved safely online — you can see them from any device.
Tip: Many Singapore mobile plans include free access to Google One or iCloud storage. Ask your telco (Singtel, StarHub, or M1) what is included with your plan.
