AI & You: The Absolute Basics
A plain-language introduction to artificial intelligence and how it shows up in your daily life.
What Is AI?
AI stands for artificial intelligence. It is a type of computer program that can learn and make choices — a bit like how a person learns from past events.
Think of it like a very fast student. You show it many examples, and it learns patterns from them. Then it uses those patterns to answer questions or do tasks.
Where you already meet AI in Singapore
You have probably used AI without knowing it. Here are some examples from daily life in Singapore:
- Singtel’s Clara or DBS’s Digibot — AI helpers you can chat with for customer service.
- Spell check on your phone — it spots mistakes as you type in English, Chinese, Malay, or Tamil.
- MRT fare recommendations — the TransitLink app uses data to suggest the best route.
- Email spam filters — they learn to spot and block unwanted and scam emails.
- Healthcare apps like HealthHub — AI helps sort your medical records and appointment reminders.
What AI can and cannot do
AI is good at spotting patterns in lots of data. It can write text, translate languages, and answer questions. But it can also make mistakes or give wrong information — it does not truly “understand” things the way a person does.
Tip: Always check important information from AI with a trusted source, like a doctor, MOH.gov.sg, or CPF.gov.sg.
Should I be worried about AI?
It is normal to have questions about new technology. The Singapore government has set up guidelines to make sure AI is used safely and fairly. AI is a tool — like a calculator or a map app. Used carefully, it can save time and help with many tasks. Stay curious, ask questions, and do not rely on it for decisions that really matter.
